Most Rust settings guides tell you to slam everything to zero. That is bad advice — some of those settings are how you see players at 200 metres. Here is what each one actually costs and what it buys you.
| Setting | Cost | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Quality | Very high | Set 0 or 1. Biggest single win in the menu. |
| Shadow Cascades | High | No cascades or two. Barely visible difference. |
| Water Quality | High | Set 0 unless you play on a boat. |
| Water Reflections | High | Off. Pure decoration. |
| Grass Displacement | Medium-high | Off. Costs CPU per blade of grass. |
| Max Gibs | Spikes | 0. Only matters during raids, and that is when you need frames. |
These look like performance settings and are actually visibility settings. Lowering them makes you lose fights:
TSSAA gives a cleaner still image but smears everything in motion, which is most of the time in Rust. FXAA is cheaper and keeps moving targets crisp. If you run DLSS, let DLSS handle anti-aliasing and set the in-game option off.
Play at native resolution with DLSS or FSR on Quality rather than dropping to a lower resolution. Upscaling reconstructs detail; a lower resolution just throws it away. If your GPU supports neither, use resolution scale 85% — it looks better than switching the monitor to 1600×900.

No. Shadow and water quality are worth dropping to zero, but object quality and draw distance are how you spot players. Low across the board trades frames for losing fights.
Slightly — a wider FOV renders more of the world. The tactical advantage of FOV 90 far outweighs the few frames it costs.
Rust rewrites its config on some patches. Values written into cfg/client.cfg survive; values typed into the console do not.
