Rust crashes or will not launch

Updated 2026-08-20 · Windows 10 / 11 · Rust

Crashes have a handful of common causes and they are worth trying in order — the cheap fixes solve most cases and take two minutes. Work down the list rather than jumping to reinstalling.

Start here — five minutes, fixes most cases

  1. Verify game files in Steam (Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity). Corrupted files after an update are the single most common cause.
  2. Restart Windows. Genuinely — a stale EAC service after an update causes launch failures.
  3. Update your GPU driver with a clean install, not an upgrade over the old one.
  4. Run Steam as administrator once so EAC can install its service properly.
  5. Delete the Rust config folder if the crash started right after you changed settings.

EasyAntiCheat errors

If the error mentions EAC, the anti-cheat service is not running or is being blocked. Reinstall it directly: go to your Rust folder, open EasyAntiCheat, run EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe and choose repair. Then add both Rust and EAC as exclusions in your antivirus — aggressive antivirus blocking EAC is a very common cause.

Out of memory crashes

Rust closing to desktop after twenty minutes without an error message is usually memory. Check that your page file is enabled and system-managed — people who disabled it on advice from a forum see exactly this. On 8 GB of RAM, close everything else before launching.

Crashes at a specific moment

Overclocking

If you have any overclock on CPU, GPU or RAM — including XMP or EXPO memory profiles — set everything to stock and test. Rust is unusually good at exposing an overclock that seemed stable in every benchmark. This catches more crashes than people expect.

Last resort

A full reinstall is rarely the answer and costs you an evening of downloading. Before that, try moving Rust to a different drive — it rebuilds the install without re-downloading everything and fixes filesystem-level corruption.

FAQ

Rust closes to desktop with no error. What is it?

Almost always memory or an unstable overclock. Check your page file is enabled, close background apps, and disable XMP/EXPO to test.

Why do I get an EasyAntiCheat error after an update?

The EAC service did not update cleanly. Restart Windows, then repair EAC from EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe in the Rust folder, and make sure your antivirus is not blocking it.

Does verifying game files delete my settings?

No. It only replaces game files. Your client.cfg and keybinds stay.
